Assetspire models connectivity across four complementary layers, each serving a different operational need:

  • Physical Layer — Cables: Every cable is a tracked asset with a barcode, lifecycle dates, colour coding, and physical capacity. A single fibre cable might have 12 strands; a copper trunk might have 48 pairs. The platform tracks exactly which strands/pairs are in use and which are available.
  • Logical Layer — Connections: Connections represent the logical use of cable resources. A connection uses specific strands or pairs from a cable, allocates bandwidth or power capacity, and tracks operational status. Multiple connections can share a single cable.
  • Business Layer — Circuits & Services: Circuits represent A-to-Z connectivity requirements with primary and backup paths, bandwidth commitments, and latency requirements. Services are commercial containers grouping circuits with customer information, SLA tracking (uptime percentages, maximum latency), and billing (monthly, quarterly, or annual recurring charges). The platform calculates service health as the percentage of operational circuits and detects redundancy coverage.
  • Routing Layer — Multi-Hop Paths: For complex connectivity spanning multiple cables and devices, paths define the sequence of connections from source to destination. The system validates continuity (each hop's B-end must connect to the next hop's A-end), calculates total bandwidth as the minimum across all hops, and tracks overall path status.

Cables in Assetspire aren't just lines on a diagram — they're fully managed assets:

  • First-Class Asset: Every cable lives in the component hierarchy with full lifecycle tracking — installation date, decommission date, audit trail, custom attributes
  • Dual Capacity Tracking: Each cable tracks both its resource capacity (total strands, pairs, or circuits available) and its termination capacity (how many endpoints it can connect)
  • Colour Coding & Labelling: Assign colours and labels for physical identification matching your real-world cable management standards
  • Auto-Creation: When connecting two ports, the system can automatically create the underlying cable if the connection type allows it — reducing manual steps for common patching operations
  • Capacity Dashboard: At a glance, see how many resources are used vs available on any cable

Connect Anything to Anything

The connection system is designed for maximum flexibility:

  • Universal Termination: Connections can terminate on any type of endpoint — device ports, power outlets, patch panel ports, or any other connectable interface. This flexibility means you're not locked into a rigid port-type system.
  • Bandwidth & Power Allocation: Each connection tracks its allocated bandwidth or power draw, enabling capacity calculations at every level of the infrastructure
  • Status Tracking: Connections carry operational status (active, planned, reserved, decommissioned) with automatic status updates when cables are connected or disconnected
  • Connector Status Sync: When a cable is patched to a port, the port's visual status automatically updates in the 3D digital twin — available ports turn green, connected ports turn blue, with no manual intervention required
  • Cached Attributes: For users who don't have permission to see the underlying cable details, connection information is cached and presented at the connection level — maintaining security while preserving usability

Structured by Design — Flexible by Nature

A three-level type hierarchy ensures consistency while allowing customisation:

  • Connection Classes: Top-level behaviour categories (Network, Power, Logical) that define whether cables are required, optional, or not applicable, and whether cables should be auto-created
  • Connection Categories: User-editable groupings within each class — e.g., under "Fibre" you might have Single-Mode and Multi-Mode categories, under "Copper" you might have Cat5e, Cat6, and Cat6A
  • Connection Types: The most specific level — defining topology (point-to-point, breakout, aggregation), capacity configuration, and connector compatibility rules
  • Connector Compatibility: The type system enforces which connector types can be used at each end of a connection, preventing invalid combinations

From Physical Cables to Commercial Contracts

Model the business layer of your connectivity:

  • Circuits: Define A-to-Z connectivity requirements with primary and backup path assignments, bandwidth commitments, and latency targets. Each circuit tracks whether it has redundancy coverage and its current operational health.
  • Services: Group circuits into commercial service contracts with customer details, contract references, and SLA definitions including uptime percentage targets and maximum latency thresholds
  • Billing Tracking: Record monthly, quarterly, and annual recurring charges per service — with automatic annual revenue computation
  • Service Health: The platform automatically calculates service health as the percentage of circuits in an operational state, with visual indicators for services below SLA thresholds
  • Redundancy Detection: The system analyses circuit configurations to determine whether backup paths provide adequate redundancy
